PROGRAM NOTE.

TIDES was originally scheduled to premiere on the island of St. John in the Caribbean sea. I was instructed to write a piece that was somehow reminiscent of the sea, something that was wrought out of my American music voice that could be programmed among other American composers'works. During the writing of this piece, wherein I used a 28 note pasaccaglia underneath several sections and borrowed from the sea culture that we've created and curated over time (sea shanties and songs of sirens, elegies to shipwrecks), there was a horrible hurricane that devastated the island of St. John and our concert there was cancelled. It was in light of this awe-inspiring and terrible power of the sea that I finished this piece and tuned its emotions to match my reaction to the devastation in so many places brought on by the tropical storms of Autumn 2017.

Founded in the Fall of 2013 by collaborative pianist Diane Katzenberg Braun, the aim of Music Street is to bring high level classical music performances by musicians affiliated with the New England Conservatory in Boston to a variety of venues. Our programs showcase unique repertoire with themed and thought provoking narration to actively engage our audiences.

Since our inception we have given themed Salon concerts, arts high school residencies, performances at homeless shelters, retirement communities and at Boston’s renowned Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospitals. In addition we have established a concert series at the West Tisbury Library in its beautiful gallery space on the island of Martha's Vineyard. In its "pianos to shelters" initiative Music Street finds good quality pianos to donate to institutions or people in need.
