PROGRAM NOTE.

I can show you a map of Boston, pinpointing the little cafes and restaurants that piece was born in, where Nathan Aspinall and I took a quick 20 minutes for coffee or met for dinner and glanced over poems or decided on which musicians we were hoping to work with for the eventual premiere. One such meeting was in the Panera across from New England Conservatory, where Vincent Turregano, Nathan, and I spent an hour and a half at the long table in the basement dining room discussing the song cycle. We bounced around ideas. We’re not talking about some pick-up basketball bouncing though, this was Federer on the court with some well-matched opponent. The balls were flying fast and hard and the ideas that surfaced thanks to the meeting of these three brains, the vocalist, the composer, the conductor—how often does this happen? Truly?– these are ideas that will make the song cycle something I hope puts you at the edge of your seat and then relaxes you into it several times throughout the piece.
