PROGRAM NOTE.

Commissioned by Stephanie A. Muñoz in memory of her mother, PORTRAITS OF HER MOTHER draws melodic inspiration from the songs of Stephanie's childhood and emotional inspiration from significant events in her life.

Stephanie’s mother Martha Patricia Muñoz passed away suddenly several years ago, and every spring since has brought with it painful memories of that loss. As she prepared the music for her graduating recital at the New England Conservatory, Stephanie decided that commissioning a piece in honor and memory of her mother was a way to positively commemorate that tragic event in the best way she knew how: though music. Stephanie wrote in he recital program notes that "This is the first piece that I have commissioned and I am so glad that I got to share this collaboration with Stephanie, and I felt that I made the perfect choice asking her to write this piece in memory of my mother. Playing the melody and hearing lush harmonies throughout the ensemble warms my heart and brings life to a part of my soul that has known darkness for far too long.” I’m honored and moved that Stephanie chose to share her story with me and trusted me to tell it in my own language so that we could jointly tell it to the world.
