Flower Catalog

The Music:
Flower Catalog will be a book of 12 preludes for piano, inspired by Debussy’s Preludes in terms of scope and structure. It started as a short work, LILAC, commissioned by Jenny Lin. The other 11 preludes will be commissioned by other piano soloists, each about her own favorite flower, and will be between 2.5-3.5 minutes in length so that the entire collection can live and breath as a full ~35 minute concert set but each prelude can also be utilized as a uniquely personal encore.

The Process: Each commissioner will receive two one-on-one skype sessions with the composer to discuss and workshop the piece. The preludes will be written during autumn 2019: the preludes will be sent out to their commissioners via pdf for editing by January 1st 2020, with the final score containing all preludes being sent out to all commissioners via pdf by March 1st 2020. A hardbound copy of Flower Catalog will be sent via snail mail in March 2020. .

The Commission Fee: $200 from each commissioner ($100 at the beginning of this project and $100 upon the delivery of the final score), with all other commission funding being sought via grants and donors. (More about commissioning here.)

The Performances: Each pianist will perform her piece at least three times during 2020-to the end of the 2020/2021 season. She is entitled to play the world premiere of her own prelude until September 1st, 2020, at which time all commissioners may perform all of the preludes. All commissioners maintain exclusive performance rights through August 31st, 2021; the entire Flower Catalog will not be available for purchase or performance by other musicians until September 1st, 2021.

3-Part Press Package:
1.
Photo + Bio included on this website and in the final copy of the score.
2. One press release sent to at least ten news sources for each commissioner (commissioner’s alma mater, commissioner’s hometown, commissioner’s home city, etc.) announcing her involvement in the project.
