PROGRAM NOTE.

This piece was written for a friend of mine from sophomore year in college, Lina Song. The piece is based upon actual physical movements of whimsical creatures, and I created three watercolor pencil and pen-and-ink fairy drawings to go along with each movement of the piece, and these were projected onto a screen during the premiere. (If by some reason you happen to do a search of my pen name, you can find my published fairy coloring book.) My deep thanks to one of my dearest and oldest friends, Eric Hiller, for making the definitive recording with recording engineer extraordinaire Jason Carlock.

LINA+SONG+PIANO+.jpg

Born in Shenyang, China, Lina Song began her piano studies at the age of five. She has appeared at music festivals around the world, including the Terra Magica Music Festival in Croatia, International Piano & Chamber Music Festival Philippines in Manila, MusicAlp Festival in France, and International Keyboard Institute & Festival in New York.

Ms. Song earned two degrees in Piano Performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University: a Bachelor of Music with an honors distinction, under the tutelage of Dr. Winston Choi; and a Master of Music, under the tutelage of Professor Adam Neiman. In recognition of her exceptional academic achievements, she was awarded a Dean’s List distinction, and over the course of her studies, she was selected to participate in master classes with distinguished artists, such as Enrico Elisi, Gabriel Kwok, Martin Katz, Andreas Klein, and Jeni Slotchiver.

Ms. Song’s teaching philosophy and education goals are to help her students both understand and enjoy music. Just as importantly, students will be able to interpret music independently to become their own teacher in the future.

Helping her students to understand music is her number one task. This includes understanding different musical styles, (such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionism, Contemporary, and Modern), the form of the piece, and the theory inside of the piece. The reason for this is we have to understand the music before we truly enjoy it. After having a good understanding of the piece, we are able to enjoy it and have fun with it, which in turn brings creativity and motivation to continue learning.

Currently residing in Edgewater NJ, Lina Song serves on the piano faculty of the Bergen Academy of Music & Art and, along with her husband, jointly owns Presto Packaging Solutions, a large-scale manufacturing company.
